Ten questions for Cally Johnson-Isaacs...

Cally Johnson-Isaacs is a name you're going to hear a lot of in the next year or two. She's taken the blog-world by storm with her Cally-Jane Studio blog, and is now finally unleashing her unique creations with her first picture book 'Elephantantrum'. She was kind enough to take time out from her hectic schedule to answer a few questions...

Describe a typical working day for you...

My cat Lucy wakes me up at breakfast time. I have a nice walk on the beach and daydream about owning a bichon frise. Then I focus on my artwork. I usually can’t wait to get started and make sure I’m at my desk by 9am.

How easy do you find it working from home? Are there too many distractions?

I find it very easy to work from home, lots of people tell me they could never do it but I love it. Of course it helps that I am passionate about what I do. Very occasionally I do miss working in the studio (at Hallmark) but I remind myself how nice it is to have that sense of freedom in my working day.

There isn’t a lot to distract me, as fortunately my main interest is my artwork! (Apart from the fridge, obviously). 5live keeps me company, as does Lucy and sometimes Philip Schofield but only via the TV.

How important is the online art community (such as flickr, twitter and of course your blog followers) to you?

The online art community is extremely important. I feel it’s vital to have contact with other freelancers and I’ve met lots of people I consider to be good friends, which is a huge bonus. The feedback I gain through my blog is crucial. It challenges me, it encourages me to try new things and gives me the confidence in the style I’ve developed.

Your blog has bloomed with followers in the past year or so, more than enough for a decent sized cult – what’s your secret?

Haha! I spend time visiting other blogs and I make sure I leave a comment when I do. I post regularly and get involved with online art projects such as Illustration Friday, They Draw & Cook etc. Also being part of a fab group at www.welovetoillustrate.com has helped my blog to gain loads of exposure.

What were your favourite children’s books as a kid?

I will never forget a book called Tiger Pig. I remember making my dad read it to me over and over. (Does anyone know that book?) I also loved John Burningham, Richard Scarry, Raymond Briggs, Janet and Allan Ahlberg and Maurice Sendak. I loved books as a child and still do.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the children’s book market? Are there any artists that stand out for you?

There are so many wonderful artists in the market. It is such an exciting industry. I particularly love Emily Gravett, Mick Inkpen, Leigh Hodgkinson, Neal Layton, Lauren Child, Catherine Rayner, Oliver Jeffers, Kazuno Kohara, Axel Scheffler…I could go on and on! Lots of things are changing with the introduction of book apps but it’s very interesting to see where things are going and it’s amazing to be part of that.

What bugs you more – being tailgated or being stuck behind an infuriatingly slow driver?

Tailgaters are the worst! You know who you are! My response is to drive infuriatingly slow.

Favourite Geordie expression?

Whey aye man, bonny day the day…pet.

If you weren’t an illustrator, what profession do you think you’d be in?

This is the hardest question for me to answer! All I’ve ever wanted to be is an illustrator. There was a very brief ‘I want to be a vet’ phase, then I realised I’d have to deal with poorly animals and that would be sad. I suppose chocolate tasting would be a good direction for me. Or an elephant keeper.

Finally, what can we expect to see from Cally Jane in the next year or so?

My first picture book is published this summer, which is the most exciting thing ever! I’m working on my second book now and have a further 2 books to do this year. I have a constant stream of Penny Black stamps coming out and a few greetings card ranges in the pipeline too.

Q.E.D. Classics collection.

Ok folks, the Classics Collection I illustrated for Q.E.D. should be appearing on shelves about now. The four titles are Little Women, Treasure Island, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Three Musketeers. Each book is retold for a younger audience in sterling fashion by Ronne Randall, and has 23 full colour illustrations per book.

Lauren Taylor, my editor in the series, was a constant angel through the gruelling process of getting these books completed. She paid me to say that...

The links from Waterstones are - Treasure Island, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Little Women and The Three Musketeers. I would avoid Amazon just now until they fix their mistake on pricing... £21???

Santa is coming to... your town?

Hey folks, how you all keeping? A series of Christmas books I illustrated for Hometown World are in shops now. Find them at Amazon, Waterstones or your local bookshop.

The core story from Steve Smallman is tweaked for each city on the list to include local buildings and landmarks. Cities in the range are - Glasgow, Sheffield, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Edinburgh, London, Leeds Manchester, Dublin, Birmingham and Bristol.

Fellow Advoate artist Katherine Kirkland came out to help (Big time) with some of the cities after CAIUS - THE UNSLEEPING granted us with his presence.

Look familiar? I rarely re-work old pictures but there was something about this one. The original went horribly wrong... scanned on the wrong setting, toned wrong... yadi-yadi yah... anyway, a bit of a redraw, re-scan and tone and I kind of like it now.

It was a pitch for a story book in which musical instruments came alive, so muchos fun was had trying to put personality into innanimate objects.

Freedom is the only love, shall we dance? (Or WWZ)

My brother sent me these amazing pics from the set of WWZ in Glasgow... Missed my chance to become an extra as a zombie (Being a dad of two and illustrator kind of cancels the 'Must be available at short notice' bit). For anyone who doesn't know, they've turned the heart of Glasgow into the war-torn streets of Philadelphia for the film.

The book was da bomb, so let's hope they do it justice.

Quick one for Illustration Friday... in my last job I started adding white gouache to the edge of the W/C to create texture - not as much in this one but you can see it on the cardigan and pig. I think I'd like to work more opaque in future...

A friend gave me an old Sotherbys catalouge when they were auctioning some vintage illustrations... I'll need to do a post on some of the gems I discovered.

Angus Ross (One of Emily's little trach pals) passed away this morning. We all loved the little monster...the last time I saw him was in Yorkhill, playing Star Wars lego and surrounded by his adoring family. He will be missed by everyone who met him and dozens who never.

I think it was Steve Albini who said Dutch Courage was when an American challenges a Frenchman to a fight... anyway, I've just finished 32 colour spreads and nine decorative borders in six weeks for a publisher and am jiggered. This is the first thing I came up with to relax after the commission... the idea of course is the sea at the edge of the world...probably would have worked better with a colourful umbrella but there you go... enjoy.
